The Dossier

Orientation

Margaret River is 280km south of Perth, roughly 3 hours via the Bussell Highway, a drive that traverses tall jarrah and karri forests before opening onto farmland and vineyards. The town of Margaret River is the region's hub; most major cellar doors are within 30km to the north and south along Caves Road. Busselton Airport cuts the journey to 90 minutes from Perth, and the region easily sustains 2 to 3 nights.

Vintage & Season

Harvest runs February through April: long, warm, and ocean-cooled, with a consistency that makes the region rare among Australian wine destinations. October and November, when wildflowers are in bloom and the roads are empty, are the months long-term visitors keep to themselves. Summer (December to January) is peak season for beaches and surfing; cellar doors can be busy but the weather is excellent and the evenings are long.

Signature Profile

Cabernet Sauvignon is the Margaret River benchmark: structured, cool-climate, and built for the long haul in a way that distinguishes it from warmer Australian examples. Chardonnay is the equal partner; the region produces consistently world-class barrel-fermented examples, mineral and precise. The food scene is the best in regional Western Australia by some margin: the restaurants at Cullen, Vasse Felix, and Leeuwin Estate represent dining experiences genuinely worth the journey alone.
