The Dossier

Orientation

The Geelong wine region spans three sub-districts: the Bellarine Peninsula to the east, the Moorabool Valley to the north, and the Surf Coast hinterland around Winchelsea and Inverleigh. Melbourne is 75km away via the Princes Freeway; the Bellarine Peninsula is also accessible by ferry from Docklands to Queenscliff in about an hour. The city of Geelong provides a strong accommodation and food base; the three sub-districts can be covered in a well-planned two-day visit.

Vintage & Season

Harvest runs March through May across the region's varied sub-districts: the Bellarine's maritime conditions bring later picking than the warmer Moorabool Valley. Spring (October to November) is when the region is at its most photogenic: the Bellarine's market gardens, the Surf Coast's rolling hills, and vine budburst across all three districts create a landscape that doesn't feel like it should be this close to a major city. Summer is warm; the Bellarine wine and food trail on long December evenings is one of Victoria's better-kept touring secrets.

Signature Profile

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay dominate the Bellarine and Surf Coast sub-districts: cool, maritime-influenced wines with freshness and precision that rival the Mornington Peninsula. The Moorabool Valley's Shiraz is warmer and more structured: a different register entirely from the same region. Bannockburn and By Farr are the prestige names that have driven Geelong's reputation nationally; both operate exceptional cellar door experiences. The food culture across the Bellarine in particular is excellent: a Saturday morning circuit from Oakdene to Jack Rabbit to Leura Park hits food, wine, and views within 20 kilometres.
