Wrattonbully

North of Coonawarra and still largely undiscovered: Wrattonbully grows Cabernet and Shiraz on terra rossa soils with slightly more warmth and depth than its famous neighbour, producing wines of serious weight that rarely carry the premium their quality deserves.

The Dossier

Orientation

Wrattonbully is centred around Naracoorte, 330km southeast of Adelaide and about 3 hours 45 minutes via the South Eastern Freeway. Naracoorte is a useful base for the whole Limestone Coast: comfortable accommodation, a strong local food scene anchored by the agricultural community, and central access to Padthaway, Coonawarra, and Bordertown. Cellar doors in Wrattonbully are few and mostly by appointment; this is a region for wine travellers who do their research before they drive.

Vintage & Season

Harvest runs late March through May: the Cabernet in particular benefits from the longer hang time the region's slightly warmer days allow. Spring (September to November) is when the Naracoorte Caves World Heritage Area draws its own visitor traffic; combining cave tours with cellar door visits makes for an unusually satisfying long weekend. The region is quiet year-round, which is either a drawback or a feature depending on what you're after.

Signature Profile

Cabernet Sauvignon is the strength: richer and more generously fruited than Coonawarra but with the same limestone-derived structure underneath. Shiraz grown here tends to be full-bodied and age-worthy, with depth that surprises visitors expecting something lighter. Because Wrattonbully fruit has long been bought by major labels and blended away rather than bottled under regional name, estate bottlings remain relatively affordable and often excellent: this is a region to buy from, not just visit.
