The Dossier
Orange is 260km west of Sydney, a 3-hour drive via the Great Western Highway, which climbs steadily through the Blue Mountains before descending into the Central Tablelands. The town of Orange is compact and genuinely charming; most cellar doors are a 10 to 20 minute drive from the CBD across a landscape of cherry orchards and volcanic red soil. Orange Airport services the region if you'd rather fly.
Autumn is spectacular here: March through May sees deciduous plantings across the region turn gold and amber, a colour palette that's rare in Australian wine country. Harvest runs March to May, a full month or more behind the lowland NSW regions. F.O.O.D Week (typically April) draws serious food and wine visitors from Sydney every year and sells accommodation quickly. Winter is crisp but rewarding for those who want the valley to themselves.
Orange's altitude produces elegant, slow-ripening wines: Chardonnay with real tension, Cabernet Sauvignon that the region's continental climate handles brilliantly, and Pinot Noir that improves with every vintage. Sauvignon Blanc was the early calling card but the serious producers have moved on to more complex varieties. The food scene is one of the best-kept secrets in regional NSW: a genuine farm-to-fork culture driven by the same cool climate that shapes the wine.
