The Narrative

Yarra Valley Cellar Door Tours focuses on one thing that separates genuinely great wine tour experiences from good ones: access to the winemakers themselves. Their premium small-group tours take you through a carefully selected set of Yarra Valley estates where you'll taste the wines with the people who made them — guided tastings with winemakers, not just a tasting room attendant working from a pour sheet.

Based in Boronia in Melbourne's outer east, Yarra Valley Cellar Door Tours is well positioned for guests in Melbourne's eastern suburbs as well as those already staying in the valley. Tours are kept deliberately small — a maximum of 12 guests — which is what makes the winemaker access possible. Larger groups make that kind of intimate, behind-the-scenes experience logistically impossible.

The full-day premium experience includes a guided tour of the wine-making process at selected estates, allowing guests to understand not just what they're tasting but how the wine was made — from the vineyard to the barrel room. All activities in individual itineraries are included; additional optional extras are available at your own expense. A 50% deposit secures the booking, with the balance collected on the day.

For guests who want to leave the Yarra Valley with a genuine understanding of how the region's Pinot Noir and Chardonnay get from vine to glass, this is one of the more educational and intimate small-group options in the valley.

Yarra Valley Western Vineyards Trail with Lunch — Full Day

Five wineries, a long lunch, a chocolaterie and 1838 history — a full Yarra Valley day.

About this tour

A full-day Yarra Valley trail running 9:00am–5:30pm through five wineries plus a panoramic lookout. Highlights include Billanook Estate (D'Aloision family, vines planted since 1994), Kellybrook Winery (the Yarra's first licensed winery — third-generation family producing wine, cider and spirits), Yarrawood Estate (cool-climate single-vineyard wines), and Yering Station — established in 1838 by the pioneering Ryrie brothers and one of the Yarra's most historic estates.

Lunch is at your choice of Nillumbik Estate (personalised tasting with winemaker John Tragambe, rustic pizzas and platters with views over the Kinglake Ranges) or Yarrawood Estate. Itinerary timing adapts to which venue you pick.

An optional stop at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie (250+ handcrafted chocolates + specialty ice creams) slots in either before or after lunch.

Pricing is by vehicle and combination — small groups by car from $230pp (Billanook + Yarrawood tea), $275pp (Yarrawood + De Bortoli) or $285pp (Nillumbik + Yarrawood tea). By van for groups up to 10, all combinations are $325pp.

Good to know

Frequently asked

What does 'winemaker tasting' actually mean on these tours?
Rather than tasting with a cellar door staff member working through a standard pour list, Yarra Valley Cellar Door Tours arranges access to the winemakers themselves — the people who grew and made the wines you're tasting. The conversation is different, the depth of knowledge is different, and the experience is genuinely more memorable.
Why is the group capped at 12 guests?
The winemaker access and behind-the-scenes experience that Yarra Valley Cellar Door Tours offers simply isn't possible with large groups. Keeping to a maximum of 12 guests is what makes intimate cellar door conversations and guided production tours feasible — it's a deliberate constraint in service of a better experience.
How does the deposit and payment work?
A 50% deposit is required to secure your booking, payable by direct transfer. The remaining 50% is collected on the day of the tour in cash, or via direct transfer if arranged at least 72 hours before the tour date. Cancellations more than 14 days prior receive a full refund less a $50 administrative fee.
