Strathbogie Ranges

A cool, elevated plateau between the Goulburn Valley and the alpine northeast: the Strathbogie Ranges grows Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Riesling at 400 to 600 metres above sea level, producing wines with a taut, high-altitude energy that sets them apart from the warmer regions below.

The Dossier

Orientation

The Strathbogie Ranges are centred around Euroa, 160km north of Melbourne: about 90 minutes via the Hume Freeway. Euroa is the main service town; the cellar doors are scattered across the plateau and into the surrounding ranges. The region pairs naturally with the Goulburn Valley to the west or Beechworth to the northeast for a two-day circuit. The drive through the ranges on the Strathbogie Road is worth taking slowly.

Vintage & Season

Harvest arrives late for its latitude: Chardonnay and Riesling typically in April, Pinot Noir into May. The plateau's elevation and cold air drainage mean the growing season is long and considered. Spring (October to November) is when the ranges are greenest and the cellar doors are freshly open after winter. The region is quiet year-round; winter touring is cold but the proximity to Melbourne means regular visitors make the trip regardless.

Signature Profile

Chardonnay with natural acidity and restraint, Riesling with a floral minerality, and Pinot Noir with a structural elegance that the cooler growing season demands: the Strathbogie Ranges produces wines that reward patience both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Elgo Estate and Fowles Wine are the two producers most likely to be on lists in Melbourne; both operate cellar doors worth visiting. The food and tourism infrastructure in the region is limited; the wine is the reason to come.
