The Dossier

Orientation

The Shoalhaven Coast wine region runs from Berry through Nowra to Kangaroo Valley, about 170km south of Sydney: under 2 hours via the Princes Highway. The South Coast is one of Sydney's most popular weekend escapes; the wine region sits within an area already well-served by food, accommodation, and beach infrastructure. Cellar doors here tend to double as weekend lunch destinations; the wine is the reason to stop, but the setting and the food are often just as compelling.

Vintage & Season

The subtropical influence means a warm, humid growing season with harvest running February through April. Avoiding disease pressure is the defining challenge for Shoalhaven Coast producers; the varieties planted here reflect that reality. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable visiting windows; summer is beach season and the region hums with Sydney visitors regardless of the wine calendar. Winter is mild and quiet: a genuinely good time to explore the cellar doors without the weekend crowds.

Signature Profile

Chambourcin is the region's most distinctive red: a disease-resistant hybrid variety that handles the coastal humidity better than Shiraz or Cabernet and produces a soft, approachable red with its own character. Verdelho performs well in the warmth; Chardonnay has its advocates among the region's better producers. The food scene in Berry and Kangaroo Valley is the broader draw: the South Coast has developed a genuinely strong farm-to-table culture that makes the cellar door visit part of a larger food and travel experience.
