The Dossier

Orientation

Pemberton is 330km south of Perth, about 3 hours 15 minutes via the South Western Highway: the furthest south of the Margaret River cluster and often combined with Manjimup (30 minutes north) for an extended south WA tour. The town is small; the karri forest surrounding it is spectacular, with trees reaching 60 metres and forest drives that take an hour to complete properly. Cellar doors are modest in number but genuinely welcoming; most are set within the forest rather than on open farmland.

Vintage & Season

Harvest runs April through May: one of the latest in WA, driven by the cool, wet growing conditions. The region receives some of the highest rainfall in WA's southwest, which gives the forest its extraordinary scale but requires careful vineyard management. Spring (September to November) is when the forest is at its most lush and the cellar doors are at their most accessible. Winter is wet and cold; the surrounding national parks and the Tree Top Walk at the Valley of the Giants (30 minutes south) are open year-round.

Signature Profile

Pinot Noir grown under karri forest canopy has a delicacy and fragrance that is unlike any other WA example: cool, forest-inflected, and worth seeking out by those who find Margaret River Cabernet a touch too warm for their taste. Chardonnay and Merlot from the better sites are polished and precise. Salitage and Picardy are the benchmark producers; both have been making wine here long enough to understand exactly what the forest gives them. The broader Pemberton experience, including the karri drives, the Tree Top Walk, and the forest campgrounds, makes it a destination that rewards visitors who come for more than a single cellar door visit.
