A coastal Limestone Coast region where Southern Ocean winds push in off the beach and Cabernet, Merlot, and Shiraz grow on sandy loam soils with a freshness and brightness the inland regions can't replicate.

The Dossier
Mount Benson is on the Limestone Coast about 370km southeast of Adelaide, near the town of Robe. The drive takes around 4 hours via the South Eastern Freeway and the Princes Highway along the coast. The region is small and the cellar door presence modest; most visitors include it in a broader Limestone Coast circuit or make Robe the base for an extended coastal stay. The beach at Long Beach, just south of Robe, is the other reason to be in the vicinity.
The Southern Ocean moderates temperatures throughout the year: harvest arrives in April and May, later than most of the Limestone Coast. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable visiting windows: mild coastal weather, low crowds, and a landscape that swaps between windswept and sun-drenched with the unpredictability that coastal climates specialise in. Summer is popular for the beaches; winter is quiet, cold, and beautiful in the way that South Australian coastal towns tend to be when the tourists leave.
The maritime influence shows clearly in the wines: Cabernet and Merlot with a cooler, more linear structure than the inland Limestone Coast, and Shiraz with a pepper-and-herb character that speaks to the sea breeze. Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay also perform well here. The cellar door experience is genuinely intimate: small operations, estate fruit, and the kind of welcome that comes from knowing most of your visitors have driven a long way on purpose.
