The Dossier
Geographe stretches from Bunbury south through Donnybrook and east to Boyup Brook, about 180km south of Perth: roughly 2 hours via the South Western Highway. Bunbury is the main city; Dunsborough on the Geographe Bay coast is the visitor hub and a natural first stop before heading south to Margaret River. Most cellar doors are inland from the coast around Donnybrook and Capel; a loose circuit connects them in a half-day from Bunbury or Dunsborough.
Harvest runs February through April: the bay influence moderates the coastal sub-regions while the inland areas around Donnybrook run warmer and earlier. Spring (September to November) is when the Geographe Bay beaches are at their best and the inland orchards around Donnybrook are in blossom; combining both in a day from Perth is entirely feasible. Summer is popular for the coast; autumn is the wine touring sweet spot when harvest is active and the beach crowds have thinned.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from the Geographe hinterland have a warm-climate generosity that makes them approachable young and consistent across vintages. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc perform well in the cooler coastal sub-regions. Capel Vale is the region's best-known producer and the one most likely to be found on WA restaurant lists. The food culture around Dunsborough and Busselton, including excellent seafood, strong local produce, and a hospitality scene built for the beach holiday crowd, makes the Geographe coast a genuinely complete food and wine destination.
