Bordertown

On the South Australia and Victoria border, Bordertown is a quiet, inland Limestone Coast region where warm days and cool nights produce Shiraz and Cabernet with a generosity of fruit and a depth that the region's low profile has kept underpriced for years.

The Dossier

Orientation

Bordertown sits on the Dukes Highway 280km southeast of Adelaide, about 3 hours from the city and 1 hour north of Naracoorte. It's a natural stop on the Adelaide to Melbourne road trip: the Dukes Highway passes directly through town. Cellar door presence is limited; this is primarily a grape-growing region supplying fruit to larger producers elsewhere on the Limestone Coast. Visits here reward the motivated wine traveller rather than the casual tourist.

Vintage & Season

Harvest runs March through April: warm, dry conditions typical of the inland southeast. The region offers little in the way of seasonal tourism infrastructure, but autumn and spring are the most pleasant times to be in the Tatiara district. The Bordertown Wildlife Park and the town's heritage precinct give the region a second reason to stop beyond the wine.

Signature Profile

Shiraz and Cabernet grown in the Tatiara district carry the warmth of the inland climate: generous fruit, soft tannins, and a directness that makes them approachable young but capable of developing with age. Because a large proportion of fruit leaves the region as bulk or under larger labels, estate bottlings from local producers offer a genuine sense of discovery. The region's identity is still forming, which is part of what makes visiting here feel like being early to something.
