Pewsey Vale Vineyard: The Eden Valley's Great Riesling Estate

This guide is part of our ultimate guide to Eden Valley wine tours.

Pewsey Vale Vineyard is one of Australia's most historically significant wine properties — a site with a continuous agricultural history stretching back to 1847 and a track record for Eden Valley Riesling that has been producing benchmark wines for more than six decades. If you visit the Eden Valley for one reason, Pewsey Vale Riesling is a legitimate answer.

The History of Pewsey Vale

The Pewsey Vale property was first planted with vines in 1847 by Joseph Gilbert, one of the pioneers of South Australian viticulture who recognised the Eden Valley plateau's potential for cool-climate viticulture before the term existed. The property changed hands several times through the 19th and early 20th centuries and was eventually revived by Samuel Wynn in 1961, who established the modern Pewsey Vale Vineyard as a dedicated Riesling estate under Yalumba's management.

Since 1961, the vineyard has produced Eden Valley Riesling continuously from the same elevated site — now recognised as one of Australia's pre-eminent Riesling vineyards. The combination of altitude (approximately 500 metres), cool climate, and the vineyard's age and management history gives Pewsey Vale a consistency that is genuinely rare.

The Riesling

Pewsey Vale produces two Riesling expressions:

Pewsey Vale Estate Riesling: The flagship wine. Produced from the original 1961 plantings and subsequent estate blocks on the plateau, this is a bone-dry Riesling with extraordinary natural acidity, precise lime and lemon blossom aromatics, and the structural backbone to develop remarkable complexity over 10 to 20 years. It is one of the most consistent benchmark Rieslings made in Australia, year in and year out.

Pewsey Vale Contours Museum Reserve Riesling: Released with 5 years of age on it (from Yalumba's wine library), Contours shows what Pewsey Vale Riesling becomes with time — toast, honey, developing petrol complexity, and a richer, more textural quality that the youthful Estate wine only hints at. Tasting both in the same session is one of the most instructive white wine experiences in Australia.

Visiting Pewsey Vale

Pewsey Vale's cellar door experience is primarily accessed through Yalumba's impressive visitor facility in Angaston at the northern edge of the Eden Valley. Yalumba's tasting room pours the full Pewsey Vale range alongside Yalumba's own wines — including Eden Valley Viognier, the Signature Cabernet-Shiraz, and various Family Series wines.

The Pewsey Vale property itself is not regularly open to walk-in visitors, but vineyard tours can sometimes be arranged through Yalumba's cellar door. Ask at the time of booking.

What to Taste

At the Yalumba/Pewsey Vale cellar door, request specifically:

  1. Current vintage Pewsey Vale Estate Riesling — to understand the wine's youthful, precise character
  2. Pewsey Vale Contours — the aged release, for the developmental perspective
  3. Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier — a benchmark example of Viognier from the same elevated zone

These three wines together provide the fullest picture of what Eden Valley's cool-climate conditions produce from two quite different varieties.

Buying Pewsey Vale Riesling

Pewsey Vale Estate Riesling is one of the better value propositions in Australian fine wine. The current vintage typically retails at $25 to $35 per bottle — remarkably modest for a wine of this quality and provenance.

Purchasing a case (12 bottles) of a current vintage and cellaring half of it for 8 to 10 years while drinking the other half younger is one of the most rewarding strategies in Australian wine collecting. Very few wines at this price point deliver this level of age-worthiness.

The Contours reserve is slightly more expensive (check current pricing at the Pewsey Vale website) but worth including in any purchase for the immediate comparison.
